"Mary" Mariah Sanders was the first of 11 children. She married "Charles" John Watson Baker, a railroad employee, July 31, 1883, in Gnadenhutten and they soon moved to Meadville,PA. Just before the birth of their fourth child, her husband died in a railroad accident on Sept 19, 1890. See Charles J. Baker memorial for details. Her brother Edward loaned her money to buy a house at 160 Oak St in Meadville and she took in washings to earn a living. Her brother David, 16, came to live with her to help raise the children. With the help of a large garden, some chickens, foraging for chestnuts and berries, and odd jobs for the kids, the family survived. After Mary died, Frank got the house and raised his own family there.
