Julius Rex Tyler

Rex Tyler was born February 8, 1931 and passed away on September 16, 2013 at the age of 82. The funeral service celebrating his life will be held on Saturday, September 21 at 10 a.m. at Summer Grove Baptist Church, where he was a member. Visitation will be Friday, September 20 from 5-7 p.m. at Centuries Memorial Funeral Home.

Rex grew up in Springhill and Cullen, LA where he especially enjoyed learning from his grandpa McDonald and playing high school football. After graduating from high school he served in the U.S. Navy for 4 years including participation in the Korean War. Upon returning to civilian life, he married his wife of 56 years, Henrietta, and entered the electrical trade where he worked as a journeyman electrician most of his career. His life-long work was highlighted by his time on the Alaskan Pipeline in 1976 and 1980. He also served as one of Shreveport's electrical inspectors until his retirement in 1998. Rex enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing, and especially traveling. He was a loving husband and father who demonstrated hard work, sacrifice, generosity, and encouragement. He was a friend to many with a fun-loving spirit.

Rex was preceded in death by his parents George and Irene Tyler, brother Rudy Tyler, and grandson Stephen Tyler. He is survived by his wife, Henrietta Tyler of Shreveport, his son Rick Tyler and wife Sharon of Beaumont, TX; his son Terry Tyler and wife Denise of Flower Mound, TX; and his daughter Frances McConnell and husband Jayson of Shreveport. He is also survived by his brother Raburn Tyler and wife Shirley of Shongaloo, LA; his brother Ben Tyler and wife Gail of Memphis, TN; and his sister-in-law Joyce Tyler of Springhill, LA. He is survived by 9 grandchildren Lauren Burris and husband Jeremy of Texarkana, TX, Catherine Tyler of Beaumont, TX; Philip Tyler, Jonathan Tyler, and Emily Tyler of Flower Mound, TX; Jacob McConnell, Jenna McConnell, Rex McConnell, and Turner McConnell of Shreveport. He is also survived by 3 great-grandchildren Brooklyn Tyler of Little Rock, AR, Lynlee Burris and Ryan Burris of Texarkana, TX, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Serving as pallbearers are Jayson McConnell, Jacob McConnell, Rex McConnell, Philip Tyler, Jonathan Tyler, Melvin Harris, Steve Tyler, and Mike Staten.

The family would like to thank the staff of the War Veterans Home for their loving care and the numerous friends for their countless visits and support.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Shriners Children Hospital.
