CORNELL - Sarah K. Bjerke, 88, Cornell, died Friday, Jan. 6, 1989, at the Cornell Area Care Center.

She was born Oct. 9, 1900 in the Town of Eagle Point, Chippewa County, to Gertrude (Waggoner) and Mancil Shipman. Sarah married Elmer Bjerke on June 15, 1932 in Cornell.

She attended the Eau Claire Normal School and had taught school for many years in the townships of Sand Creek, Tilden, Ruby, Holcombe, and Arnold. Sarah was a member of the Cornell Senior Citizens and Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Cornell, and had been a member of the Order of the Eastern Star of Cornell and Bloomer.

Survivors include two sons, John of Evanston, Ill., and LeRoy (Carol) of Mt. Pleasant, Mich.; one brother, William Shipman of Pewaukee, one sister, Gail Shipman of Chippewa Falls; three sister-in-laws, Eunice and Helen Shipman and Lorraine Bjerke; two brother-in-laws, Harold Muenich and Walter Leonhard; two step-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 8 at the Borton Funeral Home, Cornell, with the Rev. James Leschensky officiating. Spring burial will be in the Cornell Cemetery.
