ELMIRA Charles H. "Hap" Collier Jr., 95, formerly of Oneida, died Friday evening, Sept. 20, 2013 in The Manor at Bethany Village, Horseheads.
Born in Oneida on May 17, 1918, he was the son of Charles H. and Lillian McAndrew Collier, Sr. He was a graduate of Oneida High School. Mr. Collier married Eileen Berical in St. Joseph's Church on June 28, 1944. Mrs. Collier died in July 1990. Hap served the community for over 60 years.
Prior to retirement, Hap was the proprietor of Collier's Paint and Wallpaper Company on Madison Street. He served as Master Sergeant with the United States Marine Corps, in the Pacific Theater, during World War II. Hap was a communicant of St. Patrick's and St. Joseph's Churches, an active supporter in St. Patrick's School fundraising, kitchen committee and bingo programs, a lifelong member of the Marine Corps League, Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks, Oneida Lodge No. 767, Loyal Order of the Moose, Oneida Lodge No. 421, E. Bart Hanifin Council No. 473, Knights of Columbus, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion Oneida Post No. 169. Hap was an avid hunter, bowler and enjoyed traveling.
Surviving are one daughter, Jeanne (Raymond) Carney; one son, Charles (Catherine Fobare) Collier; seven grandchildren, Kristin (Robert) Rider, Andrew (Mary Beth Johntson) Collier, Karin (David) Fice, Kati (Andrew) Merriman, Sean (Maria Jaensch) Carney, Anne (Ivan) Guadarrama, and Ryan Carney; eight great-grandchildren, Jack and Kelsey Merriman, Bailey Rider, Charlie and Brady Collier, Braden and Alexandra Carney, and Lilly Guadarrama; one brother-in-law, Al Berical; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, two sisters and brothers-in-law, Jeannette and Darwin Campbell, Marion and William Ginter and his devoted companion, Marie Stedman. Hap will be sorely missed by his family and friends.
Funeral services will be held 9:15 a.m. Tuesday from the Campbell-Dean Funeral Home, Inc., 260 Main St., Oneida and 10 a.m. from St. Joseph's Church where the Funeral Mass will be celebrated by the Rev. Michael Carmola. Interment, with full military honors, will be made in St. Helena's Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home 3-7 p.m., Monday. Hap was devoted to his family, faith and country.
