Byron Jaye Bryant, 91, of Abilene, TX went home to his Heavenly Father on Monday, September 23, 2013, after a short illness. Funeral services will be 10:00a.m. Saturday, September 28, 2013, at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel of Faith, 5701 Hwy 277 South, with Merlin Morrow officiating. Burial will follow in the Elliott-Hamil Garden of Memories Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be John William Bryant, Dawson Byron Bryant, James Jaye Bryant, Kevin Reichert, and Brian Grubbs. Honorary pallbearers will be his great-grandsons. Viewing will be on Friday from 12:00p.m. to 5:00p.m. at the funeral home and there will be a visitation with the family in the funeral home after the burial on Saturday.
Byron was born in Winters, Texas on September 18, 1922. He was the son of George Houston and Della Minshew Bryant. To this union were born 6 sons and 1 daughter; Park, Floyd, George, Dutch, Chester, Byron, and Bobbye. Later, his family moved to Merkel, Texas where he played football, and was selected as a captain. He has since been enshrined in the Merkel High School Football Hall of Fame.
Though he could have gotten a waiver from serving in World War II due to a football injury, he enlisted in 1942 as part of the United States Army Air Corps. He served as an aircraft mechanic and earned Honorable Discharge in 1945. Following the war, he came to Abilene and worked for McCormick Typewriter Sales, and later worked for Boggs-Daniel Office Machines until his retirement.
Byron was married for fifty years to the love of his life, Maureen Moore of Tye, Texas. They had two sons, John William and Ronald Jaye. Maureen passed away on August 6, 1996 and is buried in the Elliott-Hamil Garden of Memories Cemetery in Abilene. Byron was a member of the Victory Men's Bible Class and the Adult I Men's Bible Class for more than 61 years. Byron was also a member of Masonic Lodge #559 in Abilene for more than 50 years. He was considered the "Ultimate Patriot" because of his love and service to his country.
Byron was preceded in death by his parents and brothers. His only sister, Bobbye Strothers resides in Sugarland, Texas. He is survived by sons, John William and wife, Betsy of Abilene, and Ronny Jaye and wife, Teresa of Abilene; grandchildren, John and Tina Bryant of Tuscola, Emily and Kevin Reichert of Georgetown, TX, Dawson Byron and Courtney Bryant of Abilene , Leya and Brian Grubbs of Frisco, TX, and James Jaye Bryant of Abilene; great-grandchildren, Byron Reese Bryant, Kellon Bryant, Grace Reichert, Hannah Reichert, Gage Byron Bryant, Katherine Bryant, Payton Grubbs, Tyler Grubbs, Walker Jaye Grubbs, and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his special friend of thirteen years, Dorris Roberts of Abilene.
