Artist. Father of both poet William Butler Yeats and painter Jack Butler Yeats, John Butler Yeats was a noted artist in his own right. John Butler Yeats was educated as a Lawyer at Trinity College in Dublin, but pursued a career in art soon after. Although he was a successful artist he never attained financial stability and moved often between England and Ireland. Yeats eventually moved to New York City at the age of 69. He continued his career in America and was associated there with the "Ashcan" school of painters. He died in New York and is buried in Chestertown in the southern Adirondacks region. Several of his artworks are still on display in the "Yeats Museum" at the National Gallery of Ireland, the most famous of which is probably his portrait of his young son William Butler Yeats.
