Agnes (Polly) Piper Stanley, age 88 of Ferrum, Virginia and Jekyll Island, Georgia, passed away peacefully Sunday, September 22nd 2013, at Roanoke Carilion Hospital Roanoke, Virginia. She was born in Clarkston Georgia, of the late Marvin O. and Lessie Bea Piper of Atlanta. Mrs. Stanley is survived by her husband of 63 years, Air Force Lt. Col. (Ret) James L. Stanley of Ferrum, Virginia. Mrs. Stanley was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings: James Piper and Blanche Piper Hanes. Survivors include her husband; her children: James L. Stanley, Jr. and his wife Terri Parenti Stanley; Marsha Stanley Fay and her husband, Clifford Charles Fay; Brian R. Stanley and his wife Linda Lee Stanley; her sister, Betty Piper Buice; six grandchildren, five great grandchildren. Mrs. Stanley was raised in Avondale Estates, Georgia and graduated from Avondale High School. She graduated from the Grady Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1948 and was one of the first four students of the University of Georgia, Atlanta (now Georgia State University). As a nurse at Grady, she was chosen to care for Margaret Mitchell, author of Gone With the Wind. Mrs. Stanley began her professional nursing career as an Army Cadet Nurse and upon graduation was commissioned a Second Lieutenant into the Army Nurses Corp. Second Lieutenant Agnes Piper married Air Force Second Lieutenant James Stanley on October 14, 1950 at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Mrs. Stanley bore her eldest child, Air Force Col. (Ret) James L. Stanley, Jr. while her husband was missing in action (POW) during the Korean War. She also was an active member and past president of an Air Force Officers Wives Club. A memorial service will be held at Flora Fuuneral Home, Rocky Mount, Va. Final interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a date to be determined.
