Jean M. Altenburg
Jean M. Altenburg, 74, 7020 Plover Road, Wisconsin Rapids, a Stevens Point native and an owner of Altenburg Farms, died Sunday, March 14, 2010, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Wisconsin Rapids, with the Rev. Jim Altman officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Wisconsin Rapids.
Visitation will be at Ritchay Funeral Home in Wisconsin Rapids from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and at the church from 10 a.m. Thursday until the services. There will be a parish rosary at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the Sisters of St. Joseph in Stevens Point.
Mrs. Altenburg was born Oct. 1, 1935, in Stevens Point, a daughter of the late Anton and Stella (Kranski) Meshak. She grew up on the north side of Stevens Point and graduated from St. Peter Grade School and Maria High School.
She worked as a secretary in the Old Main Building on the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point campus.
She was married to Harold Altenburg of Plover on Oct. 31, 1964, at St. Peter Catholic Church in Stevens Point.
They settled on a farm on Highway 54 east of Wisconsin Rapids. That fresh-market fruit and vegetable farm became a farm market and for the past 45 years has served as a host to families picking strawberries and pumpkins.
Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Nancy (Abelardo Arroyo Rincon) Altenburg, Mexico City, Mexico, and Karen (Tim) Sledge, Waukesha; two sons, Ron, Appleton, and Dan (Audrey), San Diego, Calif.; and five grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by one brother, Nick Meshak.
