Carl "Coop" Cooper was born in Montgomery County, Ga., on Feb. 8, 1924, the son of Nathan and Jessie Cooper. He grew up in the Cedar Crossing area of Toombs County, Ga., and attended Marvin Yancy School.

Carl joined the Navy in July of 1942. He saw action as a gunner mate on an anti-aircraft mount in the Aleutians and South Pacific. Mr. Cooper earned two Bronze Stars and a Silver Star, along with a personal commendation from the Secretary of the Navy. He was present at Tokyo Bay on Sept. 2, 1945, at the surrender of Japan.

After the war he married Bessie Manchester in Seattle. They lived in Montana and Riverton, Wyo. Carl worked in explosive sales for 20 years, then started his own construction supply business, Cooper Supply, until retiring in 1977. In his retirement he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, doing carpentry work, watching baseball and fishing.

He is survived by four sons, Gary and Beverly of Billings, Jim and Judy of New Ulm, Minn., Kirk and Linda of Joliet, Tom and Diane of Shepherd; a daughter, Patricia of Billings; a brother, Eugene of San Francisco; a sister, Maggie McCarty of Reidsville, Ga.; and 13 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

He was a member of the Apostles Lutheran Church and American Legion.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m., Wednesday, March 13, at the Apostles Lutheran Church; corner of Broadwater Ave. and 32nd St. West. Visitation will begin Monday, noon, at Smith Downtown Chapel. Interment with military honors will follow services at Mountview Cemetery.
