Pastor Sammie R. Benson, husband of Sharon Louise Sligh Benson, died on Friday, Jan. 20, 2006, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Newberry, on Feb.13, 1954, he was a son of the late Clarence Benson Sr. and Annie Mae Bobb Benson. Pastor Benson was a graduate of Newberry High School, class of 1972. He earned his bachelor's degree in theology from Oakwood College, Huntsville, Ala. in 1986 and his master's of divinity from Andrews University, Berrien Springs, Mich. in 1990. He was ordained into the ministry in 1992 by the South Atlantic Conference of Seventh Day Adventists.

He was employed by Tuomey Healthcare System for the past 15 years and previously served as a chaplain for Hospice and later as director of chaplaincy. He was pastor of the Ephesus SDA Church in Darlington and the Oakland Avenue SDA Church in Florence.

His church and community affiliations were numerous and included: Adventist Chaplain Ministries, The College of Chaplains, Association for Clinical Pastoral Education Inc., Sumter County Association of Concerned Clergy, S.C. Ministerial Association, president of the Sumter County Ministerial Association, chairman of Oakland Avenue SDA School Board, and the Wateree Aids Task Force.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister, Clarence Benson Jr., Thomas Benson, Roy Benson and Margie Finch.

Surviving are his wife, Sharon Benson of the home; four children, Keela Holliday of Huntsville, Ala., Kenneth Benson, Kevin Benson and Ketreena Benson, all of the home; seven grandchildren; four brothers, Charles Benson of Buffalo, N.Y., Joseph Benson of Newark, N.J., Robert (Corine) Benson of Kinard, and Johnny (Alice) Benson of Columbia; three sisters, Gertrude Reed of Winston Salem, N.C., Carrie (John) Brown of Buffalo and Nancy Wilson of Newberry.

Funeral services will be held at noon Wednesday at the Berea Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 675 S. Lafayette. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park.
