Etta Ruth Hoogestraat was born August 3, 1910 in Lennoz, South Dakota. She was the third of 6 children born to Henry and Minnie Krull Hoogestraat. Her siblings were Ernest Milton (died as a baby), Bert, Delmar, Mable and Leona. Her mother Minnie died from pneumonia in 1916.
Etta attended school in Lennox, and lived there and in the Turner area until the family moved to Wyoming.
In 1921 her father married for the second time, Nancy Belle Curtis. Nancy had three children John Curtis, Byrd Curtis and Clarence Curtis. Nancy and Henry's marriage produced five children, Betty, Nona, Amelia, Ida Belle and William.
This large blended family farmed in Turner County and then moved to Wyoming in 1927, where father, Henry, worked in the railroad yards at Ettechita. While working in Wyoming Henry was badly injured and the family moved to Milbank, South Dakota in 1930.
Etta married Bert Edwards January 28, 1933 in Grant County, South Dakota. They had one son Ted. Etta remained in South Dakota and worked in the vicinity until August 19, 1942 when she was united in marriage to Emery Gagnon. To this union 2 children were born: Nancy and Richard.
The family lived in Ortonville, Mn. There Etta worked at Alona's Café for 27 years.
Etta was an excellent cook and baker. She enjoyed her flower garden and spending time with her family.
Failing health resulted in her move to Northridge Residence in Ortonville in October of 1978.
She passed away June 8, 1979 in Ortonville, Mn. She rests with Emery in Milbank Cemetery in South Dakota.
