Civil War Union Soldier. He was enrolled in the 23rd New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on September 1, 1862, and was mustered in as a Private in Company H on September 13, 1862. He served through the December 1862 Fredericksburg Campaign, then was discharged due to disability at the United States Army General Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on February 17, 1863. Over a year later he had sufficiently recovered to re-join the Union war effort, and he was mustered in as a recruit Private in Company B, 1st New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on March 28, 1864. He served through his new regiment's participation in the 1964 Overland Campaign (where it saw heavy action in the Battles of the Wilderness, Spotsylvania and Cold Harbor), and in the summer operations around Petersburg, Virginia. When most of the original enlistments for the 1st New Jersey expired in September 1864, the re-enlisting men and newer recruits like Private Errickson were consolidated into the 1st New Jersey Veterans Battalion. Private Errickson was assigned to the Battalion's Company A, and was with his unit as the Union army made their final assaults on the weakening Confederate positions at Petersburg on April 2, 1865. The New Jerseymen successfully took their portion of the Confederate works, but in the action Private Barzilla Errickson was killed.
