Velma Ammons Putnam, 86, of Hickory, died January 11, 2002, at Lincoln Nursing Center. Lincolnton. Born August 30, 1915, in Swain County. she was a daughter of Jacob A. and Bessie Hoyle Ammons.

A member of First Baptist Church, she retired from J.P. Stevens Co. After her retirement, she worked for the Council on Aging and social services.

Survivors include a brother, Stanley E. Ammons of Farmville; a sister, Blanche Teague of Hickory; three nephews and a niece in law. Wayne and Earlene Williams of Cherryville, Barry Teague of Virginia and Marc Carter of Michigan; and a niece and nephew in law, Joyce and Joey Carer of Woodstock, GA; and friends, Rita Houston, Clyde and Alice Bluff and Dorothy Setzer

The funeral will be conducted by Pat Pearce at 2 pm Monday at First Baptist Church. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will be in Catawba Memorial Park. The family will be at Bass-Smith Funeral Home from 6 to 7:30 pm tonight.
