William Edwin Capps was the son of Joseph Capps (1811-1872) and Sarah Ann Higgins Reid Capps (1819-1892). He married Margaret "Maggie" Kautz Gallaher on January 2, 1868. They had three children together: James G., William T., listed below, and Sarah (1873-1928). Maggie died young, at age 28, in 1877. William Edwin Capps later remarried, to Katie Alexander, on December 30, 1878.

William's first wife, Maggie, was originally buried near her parents, in section G, lot 30, in Diamond Grove Cemetery. Almost 20 years later, her body was moved to section A, lot 220, to be interred with her husband, William Edwin Capps, after his death in September 1896. William's second wife, Katie A. Capps, who died in 1894, is also buried in the Capps plot in this cemetery.
