Charles S. Billings
Charles S. Billings, 89, 4712 S.W. 6th, died Saturday at a Topeka hospital.
He was born Feb. 29, 1892, in El Dorado Springs, Mo., the 11th of 12 children of Bird F. and Nancy A. Billings. He was graduated from William Jewell College, Liberty, Mo., with a bachelor's degree in 1915 and from the University of Chicago with a master's degree in hospital administration in 1946.
Mr. Billings was the first full-time executive director of the Kansas Hospital Association from 1947 until he retired in 1963. He was also administrator of Christ Hospital, now Stormont-Vail Regional Center, at Topeka. He was administrative consultant, hospital facilities division, Kansas State Board of Health, Topeka.
He helped organize Sunflower Chapter of American Association of Hospital Accountants, was elected to an honorary member of the board of directors and awarded a life membership in the organization. He also was an officer and member of other health and hospital related organizations on the local, state and national level. He was a charter member of the Public Relations Society of Topeka.
Mr. Billings was an honorary life member of the Topeka Audubon Society, and served as president and was treasurer for 11 years.
He was a member of First Baptist Church, chairman of the board of trustees and board of deacons, church treasurer, taught a young adult Sunday School class, coached the boys' softball team and was president of the Fellowship Class, all at the church. He also was a Boy Scout commissioner, a Master Mason, member of Orient Lodge No. 51, AF&AM, Topeka High Twelve and member of the Rotary Club of Topeka.
He married Rossie A. Boyer Nov. 18, 1916. She died Aug. 7, 1980.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Phyllis E. Fletcher, Cedar Falls, Iowa; a son, Ronald G. Billings, Overland Park; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Topeka. Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church.
