Charles Joseph Schafer, 78, Detroit Lakes, died Saturday, May 20, 2006, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.

Mr. Schafer was born April 30, 1928, near Hillsboro, N.D., where he grew up and graduated from high school. He served in the U.S. Navy. On Sept. 12, 1950, he married Fern Schamens in Cando, N.D. He graduated from North Dakota State University with a degree in agriculture. He worked for the Farmers Home Administration, Rolla, N.D.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Russell (LuAnn), Auburn, Wash., John (Kimberly) Schafer, Audubon, Minn.; two daughters, Vicia Schafer (Rodney Miller), Center, N.D., Kathleen Hedge, Dickinson, N.D.; a brother, David (Bette), St. Louis; a sister, Mary Lou (Lloyd) Rafferty, Denver, Colo.; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
