Died of typhoid fever, age 22 years, 11 months, and 6 days; place of death was Clark Ave. in St. Louis. Report of death was for the week ending Sept 22, 1860.

From various census records, it was determined that she was the daughter of the man linked below, James M. Clendenin, and his first wife Eliza Barrow Peay Clendenin (Eliza died in 1841 in Louisville). Julia was the 7th of 8 children of this couple.

Julia and perhaps a sister-in-law(?) Eliza Butler, age 25, were living in St. Louis as late as August 1860, from the census. At that time, Julia and Eliza were living in the household of a lawyer named Henry N. Dedman, age 33, along with his wife and 2 young children. Henry and his wife Mary A. Dedman were also born in Kentucky. (Henry Dedman died just 10 days prior to Julia Butler, and was also buried here at Bellefontaine.)

Julia Clendenin Butler's father's memorial shows the census return for the earlier 1850 census which recorded the family in St. Louis. They were also still listed that same year in the 1850 census in Kentucky, with the same children, William, John, James, Ellen, and Julia.

Julia was the first wife of Wallace Clark Butler, and they had a child Julia Wallace Butler born in 1860, not long before her mother's early death. This child was not shown in the 1860 census with her mother (though the child was found in the 1870 census living with her father and others in St. Louis that year, including Eva Butler who was probably the one named Evie who was second wife of Wallace).

Julia's full name apparently was Eliza Julia, though she must have gone by Julia which was the way she was listed in the census and death records.

Julia's husband Wallace Clark Butler lived well into the 20th century. His death record showed him to be a widower, and that his wife was named Evie H. Butler (2nd wife), also buried here in Bellefontaine. Evie had died in Butte, Montana in 1893, from typhoid.

Wallace C. Butler Jr. was the informant on his father's death cert. Wallace Sr.'s parents were named Mann Butler of Virginia and Martha Dedman of Virginia. (The Dedmans that Julia was living with in 1860 would have been Wallace's mother's family members.)

See Major Wallace Butler's memorial here in Bellefontaine for his story which shows his Civil War experiences and various battles, and would explain why he was not found in the 1860 census with Julia right before she died.

Mann Butler, Wallace's father, is listed here in Bellefontaine. His full name Edward Mann Butler, born 22 July 1784 in Baltimore (parents names unknown). He died in the Gasconade Bridge train disaster (in Missouri) in 1855 when 34 people were killed in a terrible accident. See Mann Butler's memorial here in Bellefontaine. Martha, Wallace's mother and Mann's wife, died just a year after Mann and was buried here as well.
