Dr J. A. Kimzey
Dr. John Albert Kimzey, 56, died suddenly in Detroit, Mich., Monday, July 23rd. Dr Kimzey was in swimming at Belle Isle, when he suffered a heart collapse.
Funeral services were held in Union City (Tennessee) at the First Presbyterian Church Thursday morning, July 26th, at nine o'clock, conducted by Rev. W. B. Cunningham and Rev. E. D. Fritts.
Pall bearers were: Allen Wade, W. M. Miles, W. H. Swiggart, Dr. M. A. Blanton, J. M. Debow and J. D. Hubbs. Interment took place in Baldwyn, Mississippi, Thursday afternoon.
Dr. John Albert Kimzey, second son of the late John A. B. Kimzey and Mittie Burge Kimzey, was born in the year of 1878, Baldwyn, Mississippi. He spent his early boyhood in Union City, educated in the public schools here, and at the age of 18 years enlisted in the First Tennessee Volunteer Regiment for service in Philippines during the Spanish American War. He took part in the battles of Manila, Ho-Ho and other major engagements. Later he served as personal bodyguard to Governor General Taft at the palace at Manila, where he became an intimate friend of the future president. Later he served with distinction during the Boxer Rebellion in China.
Returning to the United States he was mustered out in Detroit, where he entered school of preparation for Yale University where he took his academic and medical courses. On finishing study at Yale he did post graduate work at John Hopkins, Baltimore, and New York Post Graduate School of Medicine. In 1912 he returned to Detroit, Michigan to establish his surgical practice where he continued until his untimely death.
He married Miss Grace Shields of Brooklyn, N. Y. in 1913, and to this union two sons, Burge and Jack, and two daughters, Blanche and Ruth, were born.
During the World War he was commissioned a captain in the Medical Corps and was stationed at the Rockefeller Institute, New York City, where he was in charge of one of the surgical units of the Foundation.
He was a Mason, a Presbyterian and an official of the Wayne County Medical Society of Michigan, also the Alpha Sigma Phi Academic and Alpha Kappa Medical Societies.
Besides his children, his four brothers, Dr. Fritz J. Kimzey, Baltimore, Maryland, J. Harrison Kimzey, Memphis, and Earle A. Kimzey of New Orleans, La, and Doctor Frank B. Kimzey of this city, immediately survive him.
