Marguerite I. Clark, 100, of Murray Street died Dec. 14, 2000, at a local nursing facility after a long illness.

Born in Harpswell, a daughter of Charles and Izetta Hamilton Allen, she attended schools there and graduated from North Yarmouth Academy in 1920.

During World War I, she knit layettes for infants and rolled bandages for the military, and during World War II, she opened her home to many young sailors and their families who came to Portland, providing a home-cooked meal, a birthday cake or a place to stay until their ship left.

For many years she had a small farm and shared items with her neighbors during the Depression.

She was a former member of First Baptist Church of Portland, where she was a beginners teacher for many years and was a deaconess. She was currently attending Cornerstone Baptist Church in Scarborough.

She was past president of the Cummings School Mothers Club and a past president of the Ralph D. Caldwell Auxiliary, American Legion, and served on the State Child Welfare Committee.

She enjoyed crafts, knitting, and crocheting until she became blind. She then enjoyed listening to books on tape.

Her husband, John A. Clark, died in 1970.

Surviving are three daughters, Carolyn C. Andrews of Westbrook, Priscilla M. Powers and Jacquelin E. Menchen, both of Portland; eight grandchildren, 12 greatgrandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Jones, Rich and Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., where a funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday with the Rev. Kenneth Endean officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Portland.
