Lewis B. Ames Dead
Lewis B. Ames, Colorado pioneer and prominent Arapahoe county citizen, died at his home one half mile south of Littleton last Monday morning, September 1st, after a brief illness. Judge Ames was born at Canton, St. Lawrence Co., New York, May 7th, 1826, and received his education in the public schools there. Later he graduated from an Academy in Canton, after which he was engaged as a teacher. In the year of 1847 he went to Michigan and for four years was employed in the Recorder’s office at Hillsdale. He returned to Lawrence county, New York, in 1851 and remained four years. In 1855 he went to Decorah, Iowa, and engaged in the shoe business.
On June 8th 1860, he arrived in Denver and for five years was engaged in mining near Black Hawk. In 1867 he bought the ranch south of Littleton and the following year moved there, residing on the place ever since.
The deceased served as justice of the peace from 1868 to 1882. He was one of our substantial citizens and well liked by all who enjoyed his acquaintance.
He was married on January 31, 1866, to Laura H. Larawa, who died July 27, 1897. Two children were born during their union, but both are dead.
Funeral services were held at his late residence Wednesday morning at 10 o’clock under the direction of the Masonic Order of which he was a member. Interment in Littleton cemetery.
