Ronald "Ronny" Simmons of Leesburg, Florida was taken out of his mother's custody at age 5 months and placed in the care of his father, Chris Simmons, who lived with him in a tent in the woods with a commune of "Rainbow People." His mother reported Ronny missing in the spring of 2003, even though Chris had custody, because she feared for Ronny's welfare. A short time later, Chris disappeared with the baby. Chris was found alone in Texas in February 2004. He told police that Ronny had died of natural causes in May or June 2003 and he had buried the baby in Ocala National Forest, under a tree into which he carved a heart to mark the spot. Police dug up the body and the medical examiner determined that Ronny did indeed die naturally. Chris still faces charges for illegally burying his remains, however, Ronny's mother has criticized Florida's Department of Childrenand Families, saying if they had not removed the child from her custody then he would still be alive.
