Durham FORUM, October 9, 1986: “Echo Lambert 1898-1986. A memorial service was held September 13 for long time Durham area resident Echo Starr Lambert. He died September 7 at the Manteca home of his daughter in law, Lois Brinson Lambert, where he was celebrating his 88th birthday.

“Lambert was born September 8, 1898 in Whittier, CA. In 1919 he married Myrtle Hiatt of Tulare. They farmed in that area until 1924 when Lambert went to work for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company at Sanger, Ca. He was transferred to Chico in 1918, but, finding he was still a farmer at heart, he resigned from the company in 1932 and moved to a ranch two miles north of Durham owned by R.J. Crow (now known as the Sloan place.). In 1941 the Lamberts moved to 80 acres three miles east of Durham that Mr. Crow had purchased, and in 1942 Echo and Myrtle bought the land and started the Myecho Ranch, building it into a top producing dairy, and earning Lambert a reputation as one of the most efficient dairy farmers in California.

“Active in Farm Bureau work, he served as county director and earned the California Farm Bureau Distinguished Service Award, being cited as ‘A key leader in California agriculture.’ Lambert was a charter member of the Butte County Dairy Herd Improvement Association and was active in various other Butte County agricultural associations. He served as state director for the American Dairy Association.

“In addition, Lambert spent 16 years working with Durham 4-H clubs and was credited for originating the Butte County 4-H Fun Night. He acted as director of the 4-H camp at Buck’s Lake for three years.

“He was a 57-year member of the Trinity United Methodist Church where he served as Sunday School Superintendent and was involved with various youth groups.

“He served in the United States Army during World War I. He was a Masonic Lodge member since 1927 and belonged to the Eastern Star and Hi-12 groups as well. He was a past president and secretary of the Durham Rotary Club and served on the Board of Trustees of Durham High School. He was a charter member of the Durham American Legion Post 673.

“Lambert was preceded in by his wife, Myrtle, who passed away September 21, 1985, and his son Robert, who passed away June 6, 1986.

“Survivors include two daughters; Ruth Brinson of Durham and Shirley Simmons of Winchester, Mass; ten grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild; two brothers, Mike and Pete Lambert of Redding, and a sister, Marguerite Wakefield of Los Angeles.

“The Revered Bob Stewart of Trinity United Methodist Church officiated at the memorial service. The Reverends Joe Pritchard and Carl Walker assisted. Burial was in the masonic section of the Chico cemetery. Arrangements were handled by the Brusie Funeral Home.

“Contributions may be made to the Echo Lambert Memorial Educational Fund at the Trinity United Methodist Church.”
