Farmer, born in Oneida County, N.Y. Simon came to Rock County May 26th, 1853. He was in the lumber business and the manufacture of cheese boxes in New York, and worked land in Milton for three years before buying a farm North of Milton in 1856. He married Margaret "Mary" Hawkins, daughter of Edward and Elizabeth Hawkins, also from New York, on Oct. 11th, 1832. Their children were, from oldest to youngest:

Frances Jane

Gustavus R. and Susan J. died as children, Gustavus at age 4, Susan just over a month old.

Mr. Alder was the school commissioner in 1855, and also the clerk of schools. They belonged to the M.E. Church, and he was a Republican.

Two of his sons, Henry and Alvin, served together during the Civil War with Company K, 13th Regiment, Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, known as "The Rock County Ploughboys for Union Or Death." Both survived the war.
