although her marker shows her name as Emaline, her name has generally been spelled as Emeline on census records, marriage license and widow pension applications

-m1-05 Apr 1860 - Joseph Clements
(died during Civil War)
-m2-21 Oct 1867 - Charles Buffington

Emeline's first husband, Joseph L Clements, was the son of Charles & Miranda Clements. He enlisted as a Private in Company D, 3rd Indiana Cavalry, 22 Aug 1861. There is a record of a Joseph Clements, Co D, 3rd Ind Cav, dying of typhoid fever at 5th St General Hospital in Washington DC, but there is no record of his burial. At least not until there is a burial for a Joseph Clements at Hampton National Cemetery on 18 Sep 1862. It was shortly after this, Dec 1862, that Emeline applied for her widow's pension. I believe that she applied for her pension shortly after receiving the official word of his death.

Emeline was left with an infant, Charles born Feb 1861, to rear on her own and made her home with her parents, Cyrus & Mary Canfield until she married widower Charles Buffington in 1867. She appears to have left Charles to be reared by Cyrus & Mary because he appears in that household in both the 1870 and 1880 census records and she is with her new Buffington family.

There is no death date on her shared marker with second husband Charles Buffington.

From the "Drop Report" on pension shows $30 paid to Emaline Buffinton on 04 Jan 1923, but the 04 Feb 1923 check was returned due to her death on 15 Jan 1923.
