His birth name was Charles L. Merry. When he was growing up he began to use his step-father's last name which was McNinch. When he went to work for the Wabash Railroad he hired out as Charles L. McNinch, which caused problems later on with his pension checks and banking. He was forced to use the assumed name for his work-related stuff. However, it still was an ASSUMED name. He never changed his name legally or was adopted by the stepfather.
