COVINGTON NEWS, FRONT PAGE, DECEMBER 21, 1916 MR. S. R. ELLINGTON CALLED TO REWARD SPLENDID AND ABLE CITIZEN OF GUM CREEK DISTRICT DIED WEDNESDAY OF LAST WEEK
Mr. Sidney R. Ellington died a t his home in Gum Creek District Wednesday morning of last week a t 11:00 o'clock . He had not been in the best of health but his death was rather sudden and unexpected. Mr. Ellington was born in February 1847 and so had live d nearly threescore and ten, practically all of it in this county. He was one of Newton's best and most useful citizens. He had not only made a close study of his business farming but he also gave deep and intelligent study to public question s of government and progress for his section . He was always a staunch Democrat and served for a number of years on the County School Board. Mr. Ellington was also a gallant Confederate Veteran. A long life friend and comrade has this t o say of him as a soldier of the Sixties: At the age of 16 he enlisted in Cobb's Legion and was with that Legion until the 6th of April 1865 when he was capture d a t the Battle of Cedar Creek together with the majority of Longstreet's Corps and was kept in prison until l Jul y 1865. His comrades knew well l that he was one of the bravest of the brave." The funeral l and interment t were a t Ellington Thursday after - noon of last week a t 3:00 o'clock. Elder R. L. Cook conducting the services. Mr. Ellington leaves his wife , Mrs. Maggie Ellington , 5 daughters , Misses Mandy Ellington , Minnie Ellington , Ethel Ellington , Mattie Ellington and Ida May Ellington , 9 sons: Messrs. Jim Ellington , Tom Ellington , Ross Ellington , Starkie Ellington , Grover Ellington , Albert Ellington , Archie Ellington , Hoke Ellington and Wilson Ellington ; two sisters , Miss Sarah Ellington and Mrs. Nannie Albert and 6 brothers : Messrs. Albert Ellington , William Ellington , Jim Ellington , Joe Ellington , Dave Ellington , and Bob Ellington .
