"Louisa's family left Germany when she was 16 - in an old sailing ship. They had lived in a co-op type farm in Germany, in a dorm-type building and could never own property. Her family settled in Farmington Township, Michigan and farmed. William and Louisa had 12 children, 3 died as infants. All were born in Farmington. Daughter Lena was considered the 'black sheep' of the family. She ran a boarding house in Detroit, Michigan which was unheard of in those days for an unmarried woman to do. So she must have been 'bad'." Comment on family tree on ancestry.com; Marcella Schlucter Maas
