THE DECATUR DAILY REVIEW, Decatur Illinois, 19 February 1957, p. 9, Former Nokomis Woman Awarded Rare Pension, "Nokomis, Feb. 18 (Staff) Mrs. Jacob C. Marshall, formerly of Nokomis, has become the second woman in the U. S. to be awarded a pension for service as a World War I Red Cross nurse. Mrs. Marshall, who now-livei in Manchester, Iowa, served 13 months in France caring for wounded servicemen. She served in the area immediately behind the front lines, treating soldiers who had been given only emergency care. Red Cross officials learned of her case after her husband died. They were able to obtain her pension, the second of its kind granted in the nation."

Iowa, 18 November 1958, column 2 and 3, Mrs. Maude Marshall, "Mrs. Marhsall, World War I army nurse, had been a Manchester resident 16 years. — She was born Oct. 7, 1887, in Wessington, S. D., the daughter of David H. and Carrie Haller Best. Her family moved to Nokomis, Ill. when she was very young, and she graduated from high school there. She attended the Chicago Lying–In School for nurses, where she received training for maternity care. — On July 1, 1918, she entered active duty in the Army Nurse corps, and served in France, being discharged on May 19, 1919. She returned to nursing in Chicago, and on April 17, 1931 was united in marriage with Jack C. Marshall, at Davenport, Mr. Marshall died June 4, 1956. — Mrs. Marshall was a member of the Methodist church O.E.S. and White Shrine. — Survivors include a son, Jacob L., of Manchester; two sisters, Mrs. Roy Kessinger of Nokomis, Ill., and Mrs. P. M. Perkinson of Kirkwood, Mo.; a brother, Henry Best of Indianapolis, Ind., and for two grandson, Stephen D. and James W. Marshall, both of Manchester. — She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and two brothers. — Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Gill funeral home, with the Rev. J. Heber Miller officiating. Interment will be in Oakland Cemetery."
