NEW BEDFORD — Mary Russell Braga, 99, quietly passed away on May 5th, 2013 at Hathaway Manor Nursing Home. Mary was born in 1914 in South Dartmouth, MA to the late Albert and Mary Allen Russell. Mary was married to the late Edward Murphy and was married for 48 years to the late Elias Braga.

They lived for many years in South Dartmouth, MA where Mary worked for the Dartmouth Board of Health. After retirement, Mary and Elias retired to Mesa, AZ where they spent many happy years making new friends before returning to MA in their later years.

Mary is survived by her son, Robert R. Murphy and his wife, Marsha of South Dartmouth, MA, daughters, Joan M. Goodwin and her husband, Charles Paris of Fort Myers, FL, Judith A. Shaw and her partner, Robert Ketchel of Mattapoisett, MA and was predeceased by her daughter Cindy A. Braga. She had 6 grandchildren, Robert Murphy, Jr. and his wife Ann of New Bedford, MA, Deborah Beaudoin of Woodland, ME, Lisa Goodwin of Centerville, MA, Jacob Shaw and his wife, Claudia of San Diego, CA, Cory Shaw and his wife Jennifer of Los Angeles, CA and the late Todd Murphy. Mary had 4 great-grandchildren, Ben Murphy, Nicolas and Sara Beaudoin and Bianca Shaw.

Mary had many devoted and caring sisters-in-laws, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews from the Braga family.

In addition to Mary's love of her family and friends, she had many other interests including reading, crossword puzzles, RVing with Elias across the United States and Mexico and feeding and watching her favorite hummingbirds. She also relished each achievement of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mary had a great capacity for love, kindness and acceptance. She was beloved by many and will be missed immensely but always remembered.

Her visiting hours will be on Saturday, May 18th, 2013 beginning at 12:30 p.m. with a memorial service at 2:00 p.m. at the Wilson Chapel, 479 County Street, New Bedford, MA. Interment will be private and at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any donations in Mary's name be made to the Children's Hospital in Boston, MA.

Her family also wishes to acknowledge and thank the entire staff at Hathaway Manor for the kind and compassionate care and friendship she received during her 8 years there. They were all very special to her.
