Joseph F. Faber, 92, of Maple Park, died Monday afternoon, June 21, 2004, after several months of declining health.

He was born Aug. 29, 1911, in Virgil, the son of Andrew and Mary (Berkes) Faber. Mr. Faber grew up in Virgil, where he attended S.S. Peter and Paul School.

Mr. Faber was the oldest of nine children and barely a teenager when his mother died. As was the custom, Mr. Faber left school to help his father shoulder the responsibility of the family. In addition to helping his father, he also hired out to help other farmers and family friends.

On Feb. 8, 1934, he was united in marriage to Anne G. Butt. They farmed on Burlington Road for a time before moving to the Faber home farm on Freeland Road, where they continued farming all of their lives together.

One of a fading generation of farmers, Mr. Faber needed nothing more to make life worthwhile than to farm his fields and love his family. Quiet but determined, strong but kind, Mr. Faber had both strength of spirit and depth of heart.

He was a member of St. Gall Church, Elburn, and a life member of Elburn Lion's Club and the Kane County Farm Bureau.

He is survived by three children, Marjorie (Robert) Spellmeyer of Hampshire, Glenn (Jane Schwartz) Faber of Milford, Ohio, and Raymond (Lola Lehmann) Faber of Houston, Minn.; a daughter-in-law, Helen Faber of Asheville, N.C.; nine grandchildren, Grant (Sarah) and Neal (Grace) Spellmeyer, Keith Faber, Sarah (Faber) Epplen, Daniel (Janine) Faber, Lance (Meta) Faber and Ellen, Andrew and Joseph Faber; seven great-grandchildren, Gavin, Brennan and Quinlyn Spellmeyer, Avery Spellmeyer, Laken Faber, Darcy Faber and Adria Epplen; a brother, Lawrence "Tuffy" (Pauline) Faber; two sisters, Theresa Herrmann of Sycamore and Mary Johnson of Kaneville; a sister-in-law, Mary Faber of Virgil; many nieces and nephews; and a community of friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Anne, in 2003; his son, Frederick, in 2003; two brothers, Anthony, in 2003 and Henry; and three sisters, Margaret Faber, Rose Bertrum and Madeline Sibley.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 25, at Conley Funeral Home, 116 W. Pierce St., Elburn. A liturgical wake service will be at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue Saturday at St. Gall Church from 9:30 until the funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. The Rev. Karl Ganss will be celebrant.
