Mrs. Luther was born Oct. 17, 1918, in Cook County, Ga., to Bruce and Millie Whiddon Betts and was the youngest of nine children. Upon her marriage to Hal in 1944, she gladly moved from one end of the country to the other following her military husband. In 1961, she moved to Dothan. Mrs. Luther was know as the "Avon Lady" for many years and also retired from Akwell Industries. Mrs. Luther loved to sew, work in the yard, fish and go to church. She also loved doing things for others especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She never met anyone she didn't love and made a loving home wherever she lived. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend and will be missed by all who knew and loved her. She was a faithful member of Southside Baptist Church. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Evergreen Nutrition Center, New Horizon Club, Gold Star Wives Club and the Goober Gambleers.

Mrs. Luther is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Harold S. "Hal" Luther, four brothers and four sisters.

She is survived by daughters, Linda Mercier and husband Drew of Dothan and Wanda Edwards and husband Bill of Pinckard; five grandchildren and their spouses, Paula Mercier Grantham and husband Keith, Shea Mercier Killebrew and husband Todd, Jana Mercier Linder and husband Mike, all of Dothan, Lisa Edwards Milner and husband Chris and William Edwards and wife Jennifer of Pinckard; and 13 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a stepdaughter, Sharon Woodward and husband Sonny of Neosho, Mo., several special nieces and nephews and a special friend, Mildred Wages.

Serving as active pallbearers will be William Edwards, Keith Grantham, Mike Linder, Chris Milner, Lamar Betts, Bruce Betts and Ronald Betts.

The family would like to extend a "special thanks" to the staff of The Terrace at Grove Park Specialty care unit for taking such wonderful care of Mrs. Luther and to Wiregrass Hospice for their loving care in those final days. You made it a little easier.

Byrd Funeral Home, (334) 793-3003, is in charge of arrangements.
