Emil Akerlund, 108, a former preacher and farmer, died Friday in a Havre nursing home.

The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Holland and Bonine Funeral Home.

Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

He was born Oct. 19,1880, in Uppsala, Sweden, and moved to the United States in 1909. He was one of six boys, the son of Carl Alfred and Lovisa Anderson Akerlund.

He went through the equivalent of high school and three years of training as a traveling minister.

He came to the U.S. in 1900 to visit two brothers in Chicago.

He preached for Swedish people in the Chicago area and studied English at North Park College. He then became a missionary to South Dakota for the Swedish Covenant Church. He moved to Phillips County in 1913. He later homesteaded in the Harb area.

He married Florence Anderson in 1919. They farmed in the Harb area until 1948 when he retired. They returned to Malta and sold their farm in 1953. In 1975 they moved west of Havre to live with their daughter.

Survivors include a daughter Lillian Beck of Havre, a son Oliver of Havre. five grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren.

His wife, five brothers and a granddaughter preceded him in death.
