Gottlieb is a son of Blasius Friedrich Bayha and Rosine/Rosanna Fuchs. He was a brother to Wilhelmina Barbara, Rosina, Regina Virginia, Ludwig “Louis” Jacob, Frederich, Frederick, Jacob, Christina Augusta, Johannes “John” C., David, and Anna Barbara.

In 1832, and together with his parents and siblings, they embarked on a stormy voyage to the United States on the vessel “Clitus”. (Wilhelmina, Rosina, Christina and Friedrich died prior to their journey to America.) Gottlieb was only nine years old when the family arrived in the port of New York and one can only imagine this being an exciting adventure for him.

After a short stay in New York, the Bayha family removed to Wheeling about 1834 and he was naturalized in 1844 Virginia.

Gottlieb followed in his father’s footsteps and opened a bakery on Water Street with his brother Jacob under the name J&G Bayha. In February of 1853 constructed a block of buildings on Market Street.

The newer location housed the bakery and as well as the Tin and Sheet Iron Ware Factory of John & David Bayha. J&G Bayha’s partnership dissolved in the 1870’s, but Gottlieb continued the bakery alone.

In 1853, he, along with his brothers, John, David and Jacob, were among the founders of St. James German Evangelical Lutheran. At the beginning the few members worshipped in Union Hall, situated on Main street.

Gottlieb married Elizabeth Hainer, of Washington, Pennsylvania, before the 1860 census, Ohio, Virginia, on which they appear with a daughter Wilhelmina R. age 6 months.

Together, they had the following known children: Wilhelmina Regina, George M.L., Emma Christina, twins Clara Rosina and Mary Elizabeth, and Theophilus Frank Bayha.

He was very active in the church and was on the building committee of the new church in 1892. The main window above the entrance of the church was donated by the combined Bayha families.

(Most of the above was compiled by Christine McDermott from research and newspaper articles found for this family.)

Theophilus Bayha was the informant on his death certificate.
