James Jefferson Cantrell was born Jan. 23, 1887 in Missouri. He was one of seven sons born to William Taylor Cantrell and Ida Florence Gunn Cantrell. James (Jim) came to Texas with his family in 1888. His brothers were John Osman, Gerald Burns, Benjamin Benton, Author Ross, Charles Eugene and Rube. He had two sisters, Golden Isabell and Stella Vivian who both died when they were very young. They lived in different parts of Texas until they settled in the Friona area. Jim later moved to Kansas where he lived until his death in 1977.

Jim was a cowboy trail driver and bronc buster. He worked on ranches in West Texas, New Mexico, Colorado and Kansas. The well-known "Four Sixes" ranch at Guthrie, Texas was one of many he worked on.

He also was a Veteran, serving in France during World War I.
