Allen's Grandfather, James Edward MacKrell, died in Andersonville Confederate Prison Camp in 1864 at the age of 27.
Allen apparently never married. In the 1940 census, Allen is single and living with his employer, Frank Hall, and is listed as a "hired helper" on Hall's sheep ranch. In 1949, Allen suffered the dubious distinction of being the only person to die in South Dakota from the historic 1949 blizzard. (See note below)
Allen is buried in the Bear Butte Cemetery next to his parents.
"Amazingly, blizzard-related fatalities were few. Allen MacKrell, a sheepherder, was the only South Dakotan to die from exposure. When his employer discovered him missing after the blizzard, he immediately organized rescue parties. Not until 24 February did searchers find his body near Kyle on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation." {Vol. 29 No.4 It's Going Down in History accessed from the South Dakota Historical Society.}
