Gene Francis Smith, 88, of Amarillo died Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2013.
Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday in Saint Stephen United Methodist Church Chapel, 4600 S. Bell St. Arrangements are by LaGrone-Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors, Coulter Road Chapel, 8310 S. Coulter St.
Gene was born Jan. 22, 1925, in Galax, Va., to John and Elsie Salmons. Gene moved to Amarillo in the 1930s and later attended Amarillo College. She married Arthur C. Smith Jr. in 1946 in Polk Street United Methodist Church.
She and Art loved dancing to swing band music at the Natatorium. After 28 years as the wife of an Air Force officer, she and Arthur moved back to Amarillo after his retirement. They were both active members of Polk Street United Methodist Church and Saint Stephen United Methodist Church, both in Amarillo.
Gene was an avid reader, played the piano, knitted and crocheted. She was a sweet and wonderful mother who will be dearly missed.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 2010.
Survivors include three children, David Smith of Albuquerque; and two grandchildren, Evan and Sommer Smith, Mark Smith and wife Lisa of Lubbock and Penny Scott and husband Jonathan of Canyon Lake.
