Born in Saltlick Twp, Fayette Co., PA, to Solomon & Sarah (Burnett?) Senff. The family immigrated to Sugarcreek Twp., Tuscarawas Co., Ohio, between 1847 & 1849 along with Solomon's older brother Daniel Senff and his family. Solomon died there about 1850 and Sarah went to live with her son William B. Senff. Daniel's family later moved to Daviess Co., IN.

William served in the U.S. Army as a sergeant in Cos. E & F, 30th Indiana Infantry, for over 3 years through the Civil War and had advanced from private to sergeant by the time of his discharge in Texas.

William was married to Eliza A. Schlichter, daughter of Mathias A. & Mary (Gross) Schlichter, on 23 Nov 1856 in Stark Co., Ohio by Rev. Samuel B. Leiter, Pastor of the Evangelical German Reformed Church in Canton. The couple had 8 children, all born in Ohio/Indiana, but only 3 of them lived to marry and rear families. Sarah died age 17, Clara at 20, Mavill at age 1, Lily at 16 and Solomon at age 9 mos. The other three were William Sherman Senff, who died at age 66 in a farm accident, having had 5 children by his 2 wives; Elmira Senff Greenup, who died at 36 yrs. 7 mos., having had 10 children; and Charles Edward Senff who died at age 65, having had 8 children.

William's wife Eliza died on 4 Mar 1890 at age 54 in Motley, MN. William then married Maria Manley, a widow, on 12 Sep 1893 at the Methodist Church in Motley, MN. Maria's first husband, Henry Manley died in 1892.

William died just 3 years later on 10 Nov 1896 in Motley and is buried near his wife, Eliza, his mother Sarah and his daughter Lily in the Motley Cemetery.

William filed for his military pension, citing a disability for injuries received during his service.

The family lived in Ohio, Indiana, and Iowa, and eventually settled in Motley, Todd/Morrison Co., Minnesota. Eliza's parents, Mathias & Mary Schlichter lived in Huntington Co., Jackson Twp, Indiana and it is suspected that Eliza and her children lived with or near them while William was off to the War.
