At the age of 10, David and two siblings immigrated to the United States and arrived in New York city on June 8, 1850. He eventually fond his way to Moravia in Cayuga County, New York where he worked as a farm laborer.

Sometime in late 1860 David married Lovirna Sayles and hey has a son named Henry in 1861.

At the age of twenty-two, David enlisted at Moravia on July 24, 1862 to serve for three years. He mustered into service as a private in Company I of the 111th New York Infantry on August 20th.

After the surrender of Union forces at Harpers Ferry in September 1862, David and his regiment were sent to Camp Douglas in Chicago, Illinois. He deserted from his regiment in October 28th.

David and Lovirna had another child, a girl they named Melvina who was born in September 1868.

But by 1875, David was listed that year's census as a "cripple unable to work." He died two years later on May 15, 1877.
