SHAW — Fleta M. LaRue, 92, a lifelong resident of the rural Shaw area, died at 10:47 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, 2013, at Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center in Chanute. She had been active until shortly before her death.
She was born on Sept. 5, 1921, in a hotel in Shaw to Wann E. and Laura A. (Wiggins) Brookshire. She grew up in the rural Shaw area and graduated from Chanute High School.
On May 17, 1941, she married J. Homer LaRue in Columbus. They farmed many years in the rural Shaw area. He preceded her in death on Feb. 21, 1992.
Mrs. LaRue was a member of Shaw Christian Church. She loved music, gardening, crocheting and knitting. She was a gifted artist and enjoyed painting.
Survivors include a son, John LaRue and his wife, Dorothy, of Chanute; a daughter, Carol Hazen and her husband, Ken, of Kauai, Hawaii; a daughter-in-law, Nancy LaRue of Erie; five grandchildren, Ron LaRue and his wife, Rhonda, Doug LaRue, all of Chanute, Wade LaRue and his wife, Stephanie, of Erie, Melinda Dent and her husband, Rob, of Pleasanton and Michelle Dickey and her husband, John, of San Ramon, Calif.; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by a son, Jim LaRue; three granddaughters; a great-granddaughter; a brother; and a sister.
The service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Pierce-Carson-Wall Funeral Home, Erie. Burial will be in Shaw Cemetery. Friends may call until 8 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to Shaw Christian Church and may be left at or mailed to the funeral home, Box 182, Erie.
