Kind, generous, grateful, and driven by both an eager curiosity toward life and a deep commitment to those whom he loved, Edwin Gilbert Abernathy lived a life for which he was thankful every day. And he did it all in good humor...and comfortable shoes.
"Ed," 68, of Centerburg, died Sunday afternoon, July 29, at St. Ann's Hospital in Westerville.
Born May 16, 1944, and raised in Clarksville, Tennessee, Ed had no shortage of fond "back home" childhood memories — hunting, fishing, playing baseball, and partaking in the rest of boyhood that goes unaccounted-for later when explaining the scrapes and bruises to mothers. "Papa" often captivated his grandchildren with his sports stories and his sharp hindsight when it came to who carried the football on which-down to seal another Tennessee Volunteers victory for coach Bill Battle or Johnny Majors. Ed graduated from Clarksville High School and went on to study art at Austin Peay State University before beginning a career and a family.
The same qualities that made Ed such an affable and loving friend to so many, also carried him through nearly four decades of salesmanship in the footwear industry. Perhaps he simply understood better than most people that we all put our boots on the same way—but Ed could talk to anyone. In fact, it was on one business trip to Columbus, Ohio, on November 7, 1978 (to be exact) when he approached a young lady with whom he would spend the rest of his life.
Ed spent his last years in Centerburg, Ohio, with his wife, his "P-Lou," as he called her. In Centerburg he also found an Ohio football team to root for, proudly wearing a new ball-cap, signed by his two favorite players (grandsons, of course).
Ed is survived by his wife, Pam (Frailly) Abernathy; his daughters, Dina (Marvin) Beals, Angie McLarnan, Tammy (Pete) Stewart, and Cindy (Randy) Stewart; grandchildren, Zac & Silas Beals, Margo Stewart, and Brook Timmons; sister, Jane (Tommy) Bagwell; and many nieces and nephews.
Ed was preceded in death by his father, Edwin Abernathy; mother, Anne (Swift) Abernathy-Sisk; and sister, Sara Anne.
