Doris Ellen Hackler Fowler, 99, peacefully left this world, surrounded by her three sons on September 8, 2013 at Arbor Acres. Doris was born on April 4, 1914 to the late Robert Halsey Hackler and Lura Hardin Hackler in the family home in Sparta NC. Born during WWI and growing up during the Great Depression, Doris's life wasn't always easy in Sparta, but she saw many wonderful advances in "technology" during her childhood. When the water pump was moved to the back porch of their house it was " about the best thing ever". She returned home from boarding school once to find her dad turning on the newly installed electric lights. All in all she had a wonderful childhood, and as the youngest, and only daughter, she was the apple of her father's eye. She had the run of his farm and his general store, where he would often put her on the counter so she could dance for the customers. Church was a big part of her life, especially with her father being the supervisor of Sunday School at their Methodist church. Doris often recalled that there were "two things her daddy said she couldn't be - a Baptist and a Republican!". She learned to play piano and played basketball in high school before going to Davenport boarding school, West Hampton Junior College and the Women's College in Greensboro. One of her first jobs was working in the office of the WPA ( Works Progress Administration) during the building of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Doris's brother Lewis died of typhoid fever at the age of 20 and her father died when she was 19, two weeks after a fire consumed most of Sparta. That fire brought a young man named Omnia Fowler to Sparta to rebuild the courthouse. Omnia's father later came to Sparta to see what was taking his son so long to complete the job. He soon found out that "Tootie", as Omnia called her, was the reason. Doris and Omnia married in 1934 moving to Winston-Salem where Omnia took over management of the family's newest business venture, Modern Chevrolet. Doris and Omnia had three sons, Fred, Tom and Rob. They spent most of their 77 years of marriage in their home on Robinhood Road. Doris continued with her childhood interests of music and dance, telling Omnia that they could join Forsyth County Club if he'd take dance lessons. She gave up the piano but spent many happy hours playing the organ. Doris loved playing golf with the "9 Holers" at Forsyth, but her favorite recreation was dancing with her husband and friends at the club's many parties. The family loved to boat and water ski and she spent many happy weekends at their house on Lake Norman. Doris was a devoted daughter, tending to her ailing mother during the last years of her life. She was a devoted mother as well, and with the three boys so spread out in age, she had plenty of years to work with! She missed her husband Omnia terribly during the two years that he has been gone, as she will be greatly missed by all of her family now. Doris was predeceased by her husband of 77 years, Omnia Fowler, her brothers, Dr. Robert Hackler and Lewis Hackler, and a dear grandson, Roger Thomas Fowler of Lewisvile. She is survived by her three sons and their wives, Fred and Cabell Fowler, Tom and Daisy Fowler, and Rob and Bonnie Fowler. She will be missed by her grandchildren and their wives, Omnia and Jennifer Fowler, West and Jeni Fowler, Brad and Katie Fowler, Lewis and Biby Fowler, and David Fowler all of Winston-Salem, along with Will Fowler and Lisa Lapinski of Los Angeles, Michael Fowler of Omaha, Nebraska, and Kim Fowler of Lewisville. Doris is also survived by a special nephew, Dr. Bob Hackler and his wife Pat, of Richmond, Virginia. Doris often bragged of her 14 great grandchildren and she loved them all. A visitation will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 on Tuesday September 10, at Salem Funeral Home, 120 S. Main Street. There will be a grave side service for the family at 10:00 am on Wednesday.
