Former McKeesport artist's philanthropy favored children, animals

Betty Shaw Gamble of Ross Mountain in Westmoreland County, a former staff artist for the McKeesport Daily News, died on Monday, May 21, 2012, in her home. She was 92.

Born and raised in McKeesport, Betty Shaw was one of three children of Walter Carlisle Shaw, chairman of the board of the former G.C. Murphy Co. of McKeesport, and his wife, Una Carpenter Shaw.

After graduating from McKeesport High School, Betty Shaw received her undergraduate degree from Fairmont College in Washington. In 1947, she married Guy Paden Gamble, her hometown sweetheart.
In her continued efforts to improve the lives of children and animals, Mrs. Gamble financially supported the YMCA's Camp Soles outdoor education program in Somerset and the Westmoreland County Humane Society's no-kill animal shelter in Latrobe. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Louise Shaw Dill and Walter Carlisle Shaw Jr.

A service to celebrate her life will be held at 11 a.m. today in Trinity Presbyterian Church, New Florence, with her pastor, the Rev. Barry Young officiating.

The family is being assisted by J. Paul McCracken Funeral Chapel Inc. in Ligonier.
