Joseph Michael Maruska was born 12 Feb 1899 in New Prague, LeSueur Co., Minnesota to John & Emma (Chavidek) Maruska, in this Bohemian Community. He attended school there.
Joe was a Blacksmith by trade, and later ran his own shop in Courtenay, ND. Joe had been in the US Army during WW I in 1916 on the Mexican Border. Following his return, he enlisted in the Army again in 1917 and was discharged 22 Jan 1919, having served in France. In Jun of 1919 he moved to Edmund, ND and was a Blacksmith there, later working at Edmore and Langdon.
He married Lillie McCleary on 18 Nov 1921 in Edmunds, Stutsman Co., ND. They had children Dorothy and Donald. Lillie died 6 Sep 1934. Dorothy was reared by her maternal grandparents and Joe reared Donald.
Joe went to Fargo, ND looking for a house keeper to care for him and his son Donald, and found Emma Senff-Thorne who had a 3 yr. old daughter Darlene. After they moved to Courtenay, Joe and Emma married on 12 Dec 1938 in Fargo, Cass Co., ND. Joe adopted Darlene. Emma died at home in Courtenay on 10 Oct 1944 at age 39 and was buried in Jamestown, ND.
Joe retired in 1980 and moved to Jamestown into the Hi Acres Manor Nursing Home a month later. Joe died 24 Mar 1981 and was buried beside Emma at Highland Home Cemetery.
Joe was survived by daughter Darlene (James) Bell of Walker, LA; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Besides his wives and his parents, he was preceded in death by his son Donald.
