Mr. Akers was previously employed at Springfield Speedway and was most recently employed by and a member of Laborers International Union 477.
He also was a member of Grace Community Church.
Survivors: wife, Beverly; three sons, James "Jimmy" R. Akers Jr., William B. "Billy" Cook and Shane R. Akers, all of Springfield; seven daughters, Janice L. (husband, Paul) Peavy of Nashville, Tenn., Carol J. "Teana" (husband, Tim) Scannell, Tresa L. Unland, Jenny M. Hyde, Sharmon R. Cook and Eddie R.
