According to Brethel's 2 sisters, Hazel and Neva, there is a story regarding his given names.
When his mother was pregnant with him, a salesman by the name of "Brethel Gromer" made a suggestion to name the baby after him if it was a boy. The salesman made the suggestion because he had done considerable business at a store operated by Brethel's father. According to his sisters, their parents went along with the salesman suggestion.

According to KY Vital Records, Brethel's name at birth was Brethel G. Mercer. KY Birth Certificate #22387 refers. The 1940 Census for Norwood, Hamilton Co., OH, lists his name as Brethel "J"; however, a closer look at the hand written document reveals that the initial is actually a "G".

According to his U.S. WWII Draft Registration Card, S/N T648, dated 15 Feb 1942, he listed his name as Brethel Mercer and annotated (None) where it called for a middle name. None of his military records list a middle name or an initial. It is concluded that he did not like the name "Gromer", and therefore reflected no middle name on all of his records.

Brethel was killed in action in France 21 Sep 1944 while serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. He had been overseas since June 1944, and was a Sergeant in Company H, 80th Infantry Division, 317th Infantry Regiment at time of death.

The bodies of 7,000 Americans who lost their lives during WWII arrived from Europe aboard the USS Army Transport "Carroll Victory" in 1948. The bodies of 28 of the men were returned to next of kin in the Greater Cincinnati, OH area. The body of Brethel was included in the 28 and his body was returned to his father, James T. Mercer, 4331 Montgomery Ave, Norwood, OH.

Buried 12 Nov 1948.

NOTE: Return of bodies was published in The Cincinnati Enquirer Newspaper, Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., OH dated 6 Oct 1948.
