Officer Abernathy remained in this assignment throughout his entire career. It should be noted that very few Officers remain in one assignment during their entire career. When Officer Abernathy finally retired on 01/28/1983, he had completed 28 years, 6 months, and 2 days of faithful and dedicated service to the Saint Louis Metropolitan Police Department. Officer Abernathy was also a veteran of the United States Coast Guard, and served during World War II, achieving the rank of Seaman, which is an E-3. His son Thomas, followed in the footsteps of his father and became the 2Nd generation of the family to serve on the Saint Louis Metropolitan Police Department, retiring in 2008.
