James Hendricks was born in Ohio. He moved to Illinois and married Esther Ann Wright on 1 May 1850. On 5 Aug 1861, he was mustered in to the Union Army at Middletown, Illinois. He was a Private, In Company I, 25th Regiment, Illinois Infantry. He left behind a barely pregnant wife and 2 young sons. He died near Rolla, Missouri, on 17 Jan 1862, of typhoid fever/pneumonia, and was buried near there. His grave was unmarked. On 7 Apr 1862, his wife gave birth to another son, James William Hendricks. who would never know his father.
