Harold Senff was born 20 Oct 1907 near Hebron, Morton Co., ND to Charles Edward & Lydia Emma (Brase) Senff. He attended Little Knife School District, where his father was on the school board for 11 years. Harold was not fond of school, and at one time tried to burn it down, it would not burn. His parents had homesteaded near Marshall, in Dunn Co., ND on the Little Knife River when Harold was quite young. He graduated from grade school in Dazey, Barnes Co., ND in 1924 with his future sister-in-law, Nina Olson. The family suffered 7 years of drought and father, Charles lost his farm to the bank.
The family moved to Cass Co., ND for a year, and then settled on a rented farm in Barnes Co., ND, near Dazey. Harold and his younger brother Leon were used to riding horses and enjoyed racing up and down the main street of Dazey on their mounts, to the delight of local youngsters.
Harold married Sarah Viola Johnson on 20 Oct 1926 in Valley City, ND. They were married for 26 years and divorced in 1951 in Oregon. He also married Marion Smith in 1951 in Stevenson, WA, also divorced. He married Ada_______ abt 1953, divorced, Mabel Walker in 1954 in Stevenson, WA, they married and divorced twice. Then he married Lois F. Wilson on 9 Sep 1968 in Lewiston, Nez Perce Co. Idaho and that one lasted until Harold died. He used to joke that he got married in Stevenson, Washington so many times that he got Green Stamps when he went back.
Harold moved from ND to Portland, OR in 1940. He was an ironworker with his brothers Leon and Jack in 1941, then worked in the Oregon Shipyards during WW II.
Harold needed a birth certificate to get a security clearance to work in the shipyards in 1941, so he filed for a delayed one. On that one he is said to have been born in Smallenberger Twp. in Stark Co., ND. Stark and Morton and Dunn Cos. all come together near the farm on which his parents lived at the time, could be the reason for the discrepency.
After the war he went to work for the Union Pacific Railroad where he stayed until retirement in 1972. He was a Car Man. He lived his last 15 years in Hermiston, OR.
Harold died 19 Mar 1973 in Good Sheperd Hospital in Hermiston, OR.
Suviving him were his wife, Lois; son, Ellis Harold 'Duffey' (Maxine) Senff of Redmond, OR; daughter, Janet Marie (Donald) Garren of Salem, OR; two brothers, Leon (Betty) Senff of Hermiston, OR, and Sherman (Marie) Senff of Portland, OR; two sisters, Hazel (Carl) Mohr of Centerville, SD, and Vera (Steve) Hughes of Hub City, SD; five grandchildren; 1 great-granddaughter.
