Biographical Notes:
John LaRue was born in Hancock County (his death certificate informed by his son Frank states that John was born in Hardin County), in Kentucky to Lucinda Jane Burnett (Barnett in some records, Burnett in others) and William LaRue.

John had several siblings:
Warren 1858-1909
Eliza 1859-died before 1870
Grace [McHaffie] about 1866-1885
Jesse 1869-?
Matilda [Cleaver] 1874-1932
William "Bud" 1876-1921

When he was nine, John's family was living in the township of Canville, Erie Post Office, in Neosho, Kansas, where his father William was farming.

By 1880, John had begun his work as a lead miner in the mining boomtown of Joplin, Missouri, where he was living with his family, and where his father and brother Warren were also lead miners. In the household were also his mother, Jesse, Matilda, and brother William, as well as Warren. His sister Grace had married John McHaffie and was living next door.

Three years later on December 12, 1883 in Jasper County, Missouri, John married the love of his life, Emma Jane Jones, her mother Hester Jones giving consent to the marriage.

By 1900, John, Emma and their five children (Emma had had 7 children, but only 5 survived) were in Joplin, where John was continuing his work as a lead and zinc miner. Their eldest son, Jesse (1885-1948) was working as a laborer, while his brothers Frank (1887-1967), Clyde (1890-1964), and Baron (1883-1968) were in school, and their sister Mabel (1896-1971) was at home with Emma.

Frank and Clyde both married in the intervening years, and in the 1910 census, John, Emma, Jesse, Baron and Mabel are living on Connor Street in Joplin, where John is working still in the zinc and lead mining field on a feeder/crusher, son Jesse is also in the same field working as an engineer, and son Baron is working at a bakery, with Mabel in school.

In 1913, John and most of his family moved to Los Angeles, California (Emma, Frank, Clyde and his wife, Barron and Mabel.) Jesse had married and was moving to Idaho to the mining fields there.

In the 1920 census, John and Emma are living in a home they have rented on East 43rd Street. John has taken work as a sawyer in a saw mill, Emma is keeping house, Baron is working as a baker in a "cracker works", and Mabel is separated from her husband Roy Cass, and is working as a saleswoman in a grocery store. Frank has not been found yet in the 1920 census, and Clyde and Ella in nearby Pasadena.

John and Emma remained in the home for many years. By 1930, John has taken work as a machinist in the lumber industry, and they have a full house. Mabel is with them working at a fountain in a restaurant, Baron is still working as a baker, Clyde, is working as a janitor for the telephone company, is now divorced from Ella, and two of his children are living in the household—Paul is working as a clerk for the fire district, and Fern is working as a stenographer for the fire district. (Clyde and Ella's youngest son, Gerald, was adopted by his step-father George M. Murphy after he and Ella married in 1925, and Gerald is living with them.)

Two years later, John's beloved Emma died in Los Angeles on May 7, 1932.

John continued to live in Los Angeles, and by 1937 had moved to a home at 639 West 60th, and was living with Mabel and Baron. By 1940, John had retired, and Mabel and Baron were still with him, Mabel now working as a clerk in a drugstore, and Baron was working as a laborer for a construction firm.

John's death came on May 2, 1944, in LA, and was reported by his son Jesse in the Joplin, Missouri newspaper.

His son with Emma, Baron LaRue, died October 30, 1968, in El Segundo, Los Angeles, California.
