Last Rites Held For W. A. Barris
Funeral services for W. A. (Lon)Barris, 84, longtime Marionville resident were held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Marionville First Christain Church, C.C. Keller officiating and burial was held in the mausoleum in IOOF cemetery in Marionville, under direction of Bradford-Surridge of Marionville.
Soloist was Mrs. Robert Turner, Organist was Miss Garilyn Haaker, Pallbearers were Frank Moore, Thomas L. Owens, Floyd L. Elsey, W.C. Arnold, Robert Turner, and Danny French.
Military rites were held at the maulsoleum by VFW Post 7566.
Mr. Barris died at 7.55 a.m. at the Aurora Hospital after a long illness. He was a rural mail carrier for 13 years an had served as postmaster for 10 years. He was mayor of Marionville and had been a member of the school board for a number of years.
He served as a Captain in the National Guard and assisted with organization. He was a veteran of the Spanish-American War and servedv18 months in the Phillipines.
Mr. Barris was one time Editor and Proprietor of the Marionville Free Press. Before assuming ownership of the Free Press on August 9, 1911,he was editor of the Verona Advocate. He later sold the Free Press to J.W. Brown on November 1, 1913.
He completed his college at Marionvile College in 1902 and taught school in various Lawrence county schools. He was an active member of the Republican Party and served as Republican county chairman for a number of years.
He was a member of First Christain Church for 75 years and served as a elder until his health failed. He was the last of six Spanish American War veterans who were chapter members of the VFW Post 7566 and a chapter member of the Marionville Lions Club.
Surviving are his wife, Demie, three daughters, Mrs. Virginia Jewett, Mrs. Rosemary Blair, both of Fullerton, Calif., and Mrs. Betty Sullens, Sacramento, Calif., and a son, Bill, Apple Valley, Calif., 17 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.
